FRIENDSHIP TO TREASURE

FOR YOU MADAM

The pinkish roses that melted my heart

Smiling happily with the surprised gift

Roses are my favourite flowers

 Thank you Katie

Totally surprised when colleague Katie surprised me with a pot of pinkish red roses. We have been working on several projects and programmes this year and that had strengthened our ties. Both of us have been heavily involved in mentoring our beginning teachers and we have held conversations with them on ways to improve their classroom management as well working towards making them as more effective teachers.

We had an exchange of conversation after my shock died down.

Me: Thank you Katie for this lovely surprise. You have made my day. ♥♥

Katie: Madam, you have made my year!

A terrific closure to 2012

Our Mission:  Lead, Care, Inspire

The recognition has fired my passion

STARS AWARD
I was conferred the Associate Award at a recent Ministry Of Education award ceremony. The Guest of Honour was Ms Ho Peng, the Director-General of Education. The Academy Awards for Professional Development gives recognition to the important role that education officers play in the professional development of teachers in the fraternity.

Ms Ho addressed the awardees and shared that teachers are like beacons of learning. We not only transfer learning to our charges but also frame the child's responses and experiences into a holistic learning.

We were reminded to live up to our mission of 'Lead, Care and Inspire.' As teachers, we also ignite others in the teaching fraternity through guidance and role-modelling.  I am honoured and proud to be part of this community for my contribution to the professional development of teachers.

My involvement in sharing at cluster and national level as well as actively promoting and organising symposiums and seminars for teachers have been recognised.  I am into my thirty five years of teaching and am still passionate about what I am doing.  I still see myself contributing much more in the future to create an impact in teaching and learning.  To ignite the passion in the young teachers under my care and to those whom I have in contact with is another continuous role I see.
Thank you Allah for giving me the strength and the passion to seek, strive and soar.

EMPOWERING YOU!

My side-kick partner - Fahmy

AFFIRMATION FOR FAHMY

I became your mentor when you first stepped in YSS. I further discovered we have more similarities and connections. We have worked together on many school projects. Your wife Lin, is one of my closest friends. Your brother was my son’s JC mate. Your father-in-law was my Pre-U teacher. And the link goes on in 2012 when we become form teachers of the same class.

The partnership and symbiotic working relationship we have developed, allows me to know you better as a brother, friend and colleague. It is therefore just right for me to affirm you of all the things you have done. I may not capture all of the things but from the bottom of my heart, these are what I want to share with you. I have selected our class and school activities that would speak for themselves your actions and passion you have for our Sec 1NT2 students. Do enjoy the photo montage.

For our staff retreat at Batam recently, we exchanged affirmation with our colleagues. It was a memorable and touching experience to acknowledge someone when sometimes you have taken the person for granted. Fahmy and I had a heart-to-heart talk on how he sees me as his mentor and how I see him as a catalyst for the younger teachers.

Here I have compiled a collage of photos Fahmy and Ihave done together as form teachers for Sec INT2. The chemistry we have was observable by the school and they recognise the importance of having good working relationship between the form teachers.

Dear Fahmy

I marvel at the way how close you hold your passion in Art to your heart. You are consumed fully by the subject and feel deeply about transcending this love to your students. You also feel deeply for the students and would fight the battle to ensure the students get what they deserve for. This is reciprocated by the student as they see you as a role model and as someone who walks the talk.

You could see through the students and accept students in their own unique way. You know how to keep them motivated and strongly instil in them that education would make a difference in their lives. When a teacher like you enhances students’ learning, and does it with true passion, the teaching and learning process becomes very powerful. It brings about a transformation in you and the students. And this is very obvious in your teaching and dealing with the students.

You are one co-worker who knows when to chip in as the going gets tough. I have observed you rallying in support around colleagues and working together towards getting the goals. Your presence comforts them and your involvement gives them the signal that they are not alone, but with someone whom they can gain strength to persevere.

I enjoy sharing the form-teachership role of our class. You are easy to work with and show care and concern for the students. The students see you as a guardian whom they can confide and at the same time play with. You are exemplary in the discharge of your duties and responsibilities.

I sincerely hope that you would go far one day and be able to lead other teachers to the same road signs in teaching – in bringing the passion of teaching, enthusiasm and breadth of resourcefulness to greater heights in yours and their teaching journey!

Yours sincerely
Mdm Azizah Bte Abdul Rahim

SHADOW PLAY

Wayang Kulit or Shadow Play is popular in Malaysia, Bali and Thailand and it is a unique form of theatre employing light and shadow. The puppets which have movable head and limbs are carved, colourfully painted and intricately designed from buffalo skin. When held up behind a piece of white cloth, with an electric bulb or an oil lamp as the light source, shadows are cast on the screen.

The Tok Dalang or the puppeteer is the genius story teller who weaves his narration from orally handed down stories from past generations. He sits behind the screen and does not depend from any text but this cultural entertainment which lasts all night long is told from what comes in his mind. Not only has the Tok Dalang got to manipulate the puppets skillfully and gracefully but he has to modulate his voice to create suspense thus heightening the drama. Invariably, the play climaxes with the triumph of good over evil.

Wayang kulit is accompanied by gamelan musicians and the musical ensemble includes the serunai, which is a double-reeded wind instrument and the three drums; gendang, geduk and gedombak. Percussion instruments like gong, canai and kesi add to the regular beat of the song. The pemetek or the clappers are used to create effective sounds to express shadow puppets' movements like walking and running.

I got my students to design their wayang kulit and they had to depend on their ingenuity and creative juice to bring their puppets alive. They were given some pieces of coloured paper and stationery items to do the puppets. Working in groups, the students had fun in coming up with their creation during our Artz and Sportz Carnival.
