EROSION CONTROL

This bone shaker could still perform on the road. No COE needed.

The gabions laid on the gently sloping land

Gabions lined the side of the petrol station. This is to prevent soil erosion and soil being deposited on the road during heavy rains.

Wire mesh to contain the granite.

The wire may rust and the rocks get dislodged

The gabions are stacked on top of one another

WIRE MESHED GABIONS

Taught my geography students 'Gabions' as a hard engineering method in controlling flood and erosion along rivers and coastal areas. The gabions are welded wire mesh products for earth retention and soil stabilization; erosion control and flood control.

Gabions

These cages of boulders are built into cliff faces to protect the cliff from the force of the waves. They absorb some of the energy of the wave and cut down on erosion. They are cheaper than sea walls and can be very effective where severe erosion is a problem. However they are ugly and spoil the natural beauty of the coast line or river banks.

On my trip to Johor Bahru recently, I came across gabions on hill slopes - not along rivers or coastal areas. The reason for putting the gabions on the slope is obvious: to prevent soil erosion during heavy rains, especially so if the slope is bare of vegetation cover. Whipping out my faithful Samsung camera, I took these pictures as teaching materials for my students.

Facilitated a focussed group discussion for Beginning Teachers at NIE

I SURVIVED!

Things were moving at a whirl wind pace during the last two weeks of the school term. I survived amidst the numerous assembly programmes, workshops and courses I had to look into.
Just giving a pictorial presentation this time round. Shoulders and waist are aching after a lot of typing. Very poor ergonomics management. Must call my personal masseuse to ease away the pains and put back all those veins and muscles back to their original position.

I felt great after accomplishing all these for my students, staff and the new teachers who would journey into the teaching profession soon.

Arranged for Sec 3NA2 students for a workshop at NYP. They got to learn how to set up a simple wireless network for home and what they can do with this wireless network. They also also learnt about wireless network security.

They had a hands-on session which made the workshop more meaningful and learning-friendly.
